Reasons Why I Love Writing

“A writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.”
–Thomas MannEssays of Three Decades

Different people have different reasons for writing, and not everyone does it as a career. Some just love writing for reasons known only to themselves. I for one fell in love with it when I was a little girl.

Ever since I was a little girl, I had always been intrigued by the power of words. Be it in the form of poetry, stories, or even the lyrics of a song, I realised that words hold the power to pull out even the most lost souls out of their darkness.

I first discovered the magic in my grandmother’s bedtime stories. These stories transported me to a time where women were made of gold and the solution to every problem lied in the hands of a mystic saint. A few years later, these stories were replaced by verses of Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s ‘Lady of Shallot’ and ‘The Brook’ quoted by my grandfather as a guide to the world of classic literature. It was then that I took to pen and paper to pour my heart’s innermost desires, and my mind’s complexities.

Since then there has been no turning back. The power of words that I had discovered then, I took it upon myself to show the world.

“I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn.”
–Anne Frank

According to an article I read on Medium one’s reasons for writing are just that, they’re YOUR reasons. And as someone who loves writing, one doesn’t have to justify these reasons. Keeping this in mind, here are mine.

I can create my own world

In a perfect world, we can control the outcomes of shitty situations, such as those in real life, with the choices we give our characters. It’s not just about the trials and tribulations they face though, it’s also about the setting. You could maybe create worlds full of their own ideals and politics, lands and oceans, wildlife and magic. A world of your own making. It’s not just about the escapism, it’s about creating worlds where you can right some wrongs, dispel those demons and put to bed some inner thoughts or nightmares. Our own worlds tend to give us that little bit of freedom.

I can use it to express my loves, opinions, & beliefs

I love many things. Vanilla cake, coffee, weddings, skirts, curly hair, close-knit friendships, bookshops, the smell of old paper, small businesses, and red lipstick are just a few of my earthly loves, and every one of those things is deliberately featured in my novel.

What about my opinions and beliefs? I’m careful to weave those in my writing, too! As a Christian, I firmly believe Jesus is King, and I strive to live in a way that pleases Him. I very badly want this to be clear in all my writing; even in fiction.

It allows me to make a Change

Knowing that books I’ve read have affected me in larger ways, I love the challenge of trying to get to a place where I can inspire others to change their situations for the better. I think I’m doing it to some degree now, but I dream of scaling this impact and really being a catalyst for people to take their lives to the next level.

I enjoy being a storyteller

Some people love to tell stories and also write them. This type of imagination comes directly to them. People actually enjoy making up stories and tell them to their friends, families or anyone who would listen to them. Writing can also be considered as an extension where you need to communicate and tell stories. It is a form of telepathy.

and finally..
I am simply in love with words.

I’m Angel

Hey there,

Welcome to my website. I am a poet and writer who finds comfort in prose and has grown up reading and breathing literature, which sparked my dream of becoming an author. After over a decade of writing for myself, and working as a professional content writer for magazines, websites and media houses, I finally decided to feed my soul and write for myself. I have spent my growing years in New Delhi and Lucknow. The two literary and culturally gifted cities show their influence in my work. Though the hot summer in both cities is a good reason for me to stir a glass of Rooh Afza, I covet a good snowfall. When I’m not writing, I can be found with my muse and escape, cinema.

Being inspired by stories, I hope to inspire people to share their own. The intent that drives my work is to make the world a kinder place by making emotional expression the norm. WrittenByAngel is the first step in that direction.
